About Oormila Vijayakrishnan Prahlad
Oormila Vijayakrishnan Prahlad is an Indian-Australian artist, poet, and improv pianist.
She loves bright, vibrant colors. She draws inspiration from everyday scenes and sights and believes that beauty can be found in the most ordinary things. She is an avid collector of odds and ends, and her studio is filled with boxes full of junk: wrapping papers, fabric remnants, lace, wool, and other ephemera she has been collecting over the years. She uses these found materials extensively in her mixed-media work, exploring the possibilities of collage, creating pieces from the combinations of unlikely materials. She works primarily with acrylics and gouache. Oormila serves as a chief editor for Authora Australis. Her recent artworks have been showcased in West Trestle Review, Kissing Dynamite Poetry, Oyster River Pages, The Amsterdam Quarterly, Pithead Chapel, and elsewhere. She is a Pushcart and multiple Best of the Net nominee. Oormila loves to share her art and music. She volunteered for several years at a dialysis hospital, helping patients make art while they underwent treatment. She also played the piano at a residence for elderly people with dementia. She lives and works in Sydney, on the traditional lands of the Eora Nation. Youtube |
